By capturing and analyzing emissions data with such precision, MethaneSAT empowers regulators and companies to set more effective environmental standards and solutions.

While the mission faced technical challenges—eventually losing contact with Earth controllers in late June 2025—the scientific legacy of MethaneSAT remains strong. New Zealand Space Agency’s Andrew Johnson noted, “Every attempt—successful or not—pushes the boundaries of what we know and what we’re capable of.” The MethaneSAT team echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that despite the satellite’s shorter-than-expected operational lifespan, it was “a remarkable success in terms of scientific and technological accomplishment.”

Engineers are now conducting a thorough investigation into the communication loss. Nevertheless, the team and partners, including Bezos’ Earth Fund, remain optimistic and committed to advancing future climate monitoring initiatives.
